this is from one whom I admire to the max. Joel Comm has been one of my idols for years, because of his constant willingness to give to his readers and expect nothing in return.

He starts off saying that “there have been more articles written about blogging that just about every other topic.” Then he goes on talking about the key to long term success in blogging, then he follows it up with 6 “observations and pointers to help you make the most of your Blog.”

1 – Publish original content
This may seem obvious to many people, but you cannot build a following if you don’t have something to say. Joel has been beating the drum for original content for years. He goes on to say “It’s amazing how many people still ask me if it is a good idea to build a site using the stack of PLR content they just bought for a song.” He continues by saying “PLR content is fine to supplement a Niche Site, but it should never be the primary source of content.” He finishes this with, “When it comes to PLR, less is more.”
I agree, with PLR you have got to change it enough that is sounds like something that you would have written. Not being a good writer myself I struggle to write content and the use of PLR often times helps me get through tough times of writers block.

2 – Be Real
I like what he says here and I will add to it by saying be true to the cause, as not everyone will be able to find Joel even tho he is a big name in the industry. This is my part of being real by bringing you top quality information worth reading. He finishes by saying “People will appreciate your unique voice and you will have an easier time creating content.”
I will counter with a yes but, some people are meant to be gathers of information and I am one of those and by being that type of person I can “Be Real” by bringing you lots of high quality information from a number of sources that you probably never would have seen. This is my gift, and I am sticking to it.

3 – Be Consistent
I fail this test to the max, the only thing that I can do is to step it up and be that Consistent where I will keep my readers coming back.
He finishes this part with, “As I have become more consistent in posting content, I observe my traffic levels increasing.” Me too, it is called search engine love, the more consistent you post the higher ranking that you are given, plain and simple.

4 – Keep It Interesting
I don’t have a problem with this, I don’t think, as I am always looking for the HOT topic and try and stay in that realm of information. This is not a place that I want to share my personal ramblings just because, the name of this site is “the New Marketing Basics” and not Thoms musings.
Now keeping marketing interesting is a challenge as to me at times this can be VERY boring, so this is where I try and add just a little of my corny humor to liven up the post.

5 – Don’t be afraid of Controversy
Controversy is a great way to get comments. You say the Stop sign is white and then someone will comment how much of a dumb ass you are by reminding you that Stop signs are always Red. It is also a way to see if you readers are really reading your posts or they just have that page open looking at the pictures. You don’t need to do this all of the time but just often enough to see that people are reading your posts and that they are really alive and well.

6 – Use Social Media
According to Joel, “Be sure to incorporate social media share buttons on your site(s) so others can easily share your content.” He continues by saying that he needs to place a Google Plus” button on his site and then saying that he needs to practice what you preach, and I agree. I am really falling down there and there is no reason for that as it just takes a few minutes to implement and then the time to maintain that part of the business.

I am finding that trying to maintain a number of sites requires a schedule and then being able to keep that schedule. That is easier said than done.

In my mind this gives you the reader 2 views to each article.

Integrity

What does this word mean or
what does it stand for?

In my book this one small word has a huge implcation on how you conduct business.
A couple of quotes then we share the meaning.

“Real Integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobody’s going to know whether you did it or not” Oprah Winfrey – In Good Housekeeping.
“Try not to become a man of success but rather try to become a man of value.” Albert Einstein.
“A mode of conduct, a standard of courage, discipline, fortitude and integrity can do a great deal to make a woman beautiful.” Jacqueline Bisset.
Now the dictionary version; “the quality or state of being of sound moral principle; uprightness, honesty, and sincerity. Synonym, see honesty”.

Now how does this relate to business? It is simple; you must make choices every day that will show your customers what value that you place on integrity. Remember that this is one value that you cannot put a price tag on; it is just how you support your customers and products.
Keep in mind that this is how your customers perceive you, not how you think they do. That said you want to keep your best foot forward all the time, by being fair and honest with all of your customers.

Example of poor business tactics and lack of integrity Bill and I experienced just yesterday with our Walnut Creek Meetup groups location. It seems that they double booked us with a music school that come in to play for friends and family, which in its self is OK but when the only thing that separates us from them is a set of glass doors, not what I would call good acoustics anyway.

Keep in mind that they let me know at 8:39 am the day of our event. Now if that was the only time that it had happened that wouldn’t be too bad but this is the 3rd time in 5 months that this has happened. The other times we found out when the band started showing up while Bill is speaking.
The folks at the Pyramid Ale House have double-booked us—AGAIN—with the Music School. We found out about this today via email from their “events coordinator” (I use that term very lightly). With the last couple of times they have offered us the use of a karaoke amp which is like trying to speak during a football game.

One other point that I might mention is that we are now recording the lectures so that we can give them to our members so that they can review the lecture.
I hope that you see that the Pyramid Ale House people did not offer up any of the qualities mentioned above at all, quite the contrary they stepped on us and gave us the opportunity to find a friendlier location to have our Meetups at.

The answer is simple: communicate with your regular customers, think of them as a spokesman for everything that you do. If you do right by them they will speak highly of you.

The Evolution of Marketing

Just so that you understand I don’t believe for 1 second that all other forms of marketing are dead, quite the contrary, we now just have many more methods available to us.
20 short years ago blogging was not considered necessary for a business it was something that the other guy did and most people thought that it was a waste of time. Facebook has only been around for 8 years and QR Codes started about 12 years ago. Pinterest started around Dec 2009, and texting started during the early 1990’s when people would send “07734” which when turned upside down said hello.
Now the point of all of this rehashing of things of the past is that all of these things that I have mentioned are now main stream methods of prospecting, communicating and selling your customers. For the small business to ignore these new methods of marketing can mean that you will not grow or worse yet, your business will die and go away.
The Evolution of Marketing is the reason that I wrote the book “the New Marketing Basics”. This was with the hope of trying to educate mister / miss small business owner to start using as many of these Great New Technologies to communicate and sell their customers as they felt comfortable.
It is sad, seeing the small business owner waiting to see what the other guy is doing before they try any of the new technology. Why wait for the next guy, as most of these marketing methods don’t cost anything more than time.

Discover your Target Customer

When starting out your business you need to know who is your Target Customer. This allows you to have on hand what your customer wants and needs and gives you an insight on how you can be of service to them as well. Not know this Important information make you no better than a Saturday afternoon garage sale, selling the stuff you don’t want and can’t use anymore. To me that is not a business that I want to be in.
Today in business we need to know who our customer is, what they need and when they need it. Lazer focused is the name of that business. The best way to do that is by finding what the demographics is of the people that usually purchase your type of product or service. You can do this a number of ways.
A. Look at the age, gender and Marital status, including number of children and age or grandchildren if any, of your customer. Each spends money differently.
B. Find the education level of your customer.
C. Look at lifestyle, to see if your are conservative, trendy, enjoy traveling or drive a minivan.
D. Look at their activities, interests, attitudes and beliefs, to find what they do in their spare time. Hobbies, music or environmental issues or politics. Tread lightly on the last 2 as they can sometimes be more than you really want to get involved with. Of course if that is where your headed then by all means go for it.
Then we can start that in a number of ways to make sure that we know their needs and when they need it, by asking and making note of what they already buy from You. This gives you a fairly clear target of what they will need in the future.
How do you make the first contact of a new prospect? There is a number of ways that you can go about this, old school, using news papers, penny saver papers, direct mail, phone call, Joining the Chamber of Commerce, join local business groups, I just joined the Patch an online local news paper that is in digital format and they just had a local meeting and had some guest speakers to help get everybody in the know about them and how social media can help them grow their business.
The idea here is as you get to know these people in your market area you build a Customer / Prospect list and keep as much information about each customer (securely) as you dare. I would refrain from to much personal information but would make sure that I know what type of products that they are interested in and what they are buying.
Don’t forget to market to your demographic (customer) where they hang out, work and already shop.

Influence the Influencers

It is time to move to influence the influencers by offering them something to keep them in front of the trends, which is where they want to be anyway.
What is that something that we need to offer them? The best thing is to keep them in front of anything new weather or not it is the next big thing or not. Just keeping them in the know is their motivator. More specifically, providing tips for socializing content, engaging audiences and utilizing new social analytics to incite smarter decisions.
In modern public relations we need to focus on providing these tips for socializing content, engaging audiences and utilizing new social analytics to help motivate smarter decisions.
Keep in mind that getting this type of a network setup and working effectively requires careful consideration of the multiple layers of media influence that you are attempting to engage in, and it takes creativity, time and attention to the flow of information among all of your audiences. This is now a full time job for anyone that is trying to use social media for audience engagement, so don’t sell this part short and is probably the biggest reason to have someone that handles this job on an almost full time basis.
